Die Frisia E-1 ist das erste seetaugliche Elektroschiff unter deutscher Flagge. Die Fähre pendelt zwischen Norddeich und der Nordseeinsel Norderney. Mit ihren 16 Knoten benötigt der Katamaran nur 30 Minuten für die elf Kilometer lange Strecke – das ist im Vergleich zur Dieselfähre eine Halbierung der Fahrzeit. Leise, sanft und schnell geht es durch das Naturschutzgebiet im Wattenmeer.
Die Fähre tritt den Beweis an, dass Elektromobilität auch auf dem Wasser funktioniert. Mit bis zu 150 Passagieren fährt die Frisia E-1 nach Norderney und wieder zurück, bevor die Batterien in den beiden Schwimmkörpern geladen werden müssen. Dazu hat die Reederei eine schwimmende Ladesäule mit zwei MCS-Anschlüssen, die eigentlich für Elektro-Lkw gedacht sind, installiert. In 28 Minuten ist die Batterie wieder voll.
Geladen wird Sonnenstrom, den die Reederei zu einem Großteil selber produziert. Auf den nahegelegenen, überdachten Parkplätzen sind Photovoltaik-Zellen installiert. Sie liefern nachhaltigen Strom für die Überfahrt zur Insel. Aber auch Urlauber mit E-Auto profitieren davon. Sie bekommen auf Wunsch nach Urlaubsende ein vollständig geladenes E-Auto für die Heimreise. Die Reederei hat hier noch viel vor: Zunächst wird ein Batteriespeicher installiert, um Herstellung und Nutzung des Sonnenstrom zeitlich zu entkoppeln.
Langfristig möchte die Reederei die geparkten E-Autos ebenfalls als Pufferspeicher nutzen. Die Technik nennt sich bi-direktionales Laden. E-Autos geben dabei Energie wieder ab. Die Halter der Fahrzeuge werden für die Nutzung ihrer Batterien natürlich entlohnt. Die Reederei könnte damit den Anteil eigenerzeugter Energie beim Fährbetrieb noch weiter steigern.
